I find this very interesting. I guess I'll be pocketing some needles on my home when I go back to work:yess::badidea:

Dry stripping gives you precious extra minutes to work, the fertilization rate is pretty good, and it makes it easier to cross a single female to several males while keeping the progeny separate. The key is to not let even a drop of water get in until you are ready. Herein lies the largest drawback too. Drying the fish and holding it in a dry towel rubs off the slime layer and "breaks the cuticle". The adults usually have a fungal infection two days later.

My only question is on the male, are the milking the male and then sucking up with a syringe? Or I could not tell from the video.......

That's what it appeared to be to me. The needle never penetrated. I will say that I was a bit nervous about where it was going when they pulled it out and aimed it....
Steve's dry spawning method seems less risky with regard to the slime coat and fungal infection..

It's on a thread here, I'll see if I can find it.
He doesn't use the towel so it appears to be much easier on the slime coat. He may check in before I find it but I'll look.

I don't dry strip goldfish. Actually, I seldom hand spawn at all. I'm not a morning person and just try to collect the mops by about ten o'clock.
You do not need the syringe if the male has plenty of milt. You can just let a drop of milt fall into the eggs and mix them with a wing feather. However, some males do not have enough milt to create a drop even though there is enough to fertilize a large batch of eggs so the syringe would be handy.
You can wet strip under water or with water dripping off your hands as long as you are sure the male has milt and you can put your hands on it within a few moments. Just strip the eggs into a bowl and then milk some milt from the male and swish the male's vent around in the bowl. There is a Chinese method where you hold the female in one hand and the male in the other hand. Both are stripped simultaneously under water using your thumbs. I prefer to hold the male out of the water until I can see there is milt coming out.

Pardon my ignorance. TIA!

Thanks Steve. I use mops too(a excuse to drink wine for the corks..LOL), but also shallow bowl hand spawn if I catch the female in time.......

Steve,
I finally found the reference regarding the hand spawning technique with the wing feather that I was remembering. It was on another forum. I think you were actually providing a description of that particular method and I remembered it incorrectly as a method you practiced.
It is just mind boggling, all the different techniques and practices. It's also a blessing to have all of you guys and these great resources to learn from.

Thanks for bringing this clip to the forum. I usually do hand spawns as I am very impatient and hate to see other fish eating the eggs. I have never seen a dry spawn like this, nor have I ever seen green eggs...only clear to dark golden. Very interesting....
Thanks again,
Harris

Can someone tell what was the first liquid he squirted in the bowl prior to moving the eggs into it . When he placed the eggs in the styrafom container why did he cover it so no light could get in ?
