I'm using my Coralife Luftpump to run a Hydro-sponge V double stack sponge filter, and it has plenty of power/bubbles, but I would like a quieter air pump. Anybody got a recommendation? (Renas come up a lot in these conversations, but seem to get mixed reviews.)
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric - I have Rena 400, whisper 60 and 100, million air MA 400 and 600 and in my experience whisper air pumps are the strongest and quitest followed by million airs. Rena is the loudest and weakest. I can use 8 hydro V single stack with whisper 100 compared to 4 hydro V with Rena 400. Whisper is definitely the quitest in my opinion. Rena for me was a big dissapointment...
Ive also had good luck with whisper air pumps. Last year, I bought the strongest Rena pump and it vibrated like a massage chair:backingout:

I agree Whishper with wired looking air pump(Space Ship Design) is the best.

Whisper for me, definitely.
Mine has a rounded topline (Think Ranchu topline :)
The "feet" have solid rubber bases which I think helps also. I bought another brand once (can't remember which , sorry) and took it back the next day. Huge difference.

Whisper's fan here also, it's very quiet. Although I use the big Azoo one with battery backup for my main tank (it's loud, unless I place something heavy on top of it).

Another vote for the Whisper air pumps. I also had a Rena and after 6 months it made my house sound like someone was playing a drum constantly.

Sounds like Whisper is the winner overall. I had one of the old design, and it was so-so, but I'll give this new design another look. Having the pump suspended in air with the rubber tripod feet is a good start.
The Million Air is temptingly cheap and has good reviews, but my concern would be long term performance and repair kit availability.
Thanks all,

I have both the "space ship" looking Whisper and a couple of TetraTec deepwater air pumps (both made by the same company) The Tetra tecs are significantly quieter than the Whisper. All of them sit on chunks of soft foam.

Interesting to see that the Rena aren't really worth the money. I'm glad I put off purchasing one to see how it worked but I'll stick to the cheaper and reliable Whisper air pumps.

im not sure if you have this brand locally there, but i use Precision 9500.
Its very strong and it has virtually no noise coming from it.
