Hi everyone , Rob here from South Africa . I am running a 60 litre tank with 4 smallish goldfish (approximately 4cm long) . I am running a largish sponge only . Do you think I would need extra filtration (box type) . I dont really want a HOB

Your tank is large enough for about one goldfish. So yes you are overstocked.

You should have 75 liters per goldfish. Increasing filtration will not substitute for a lack of volume. You can get by with a small volume of water with daily large water changes. Water clarity has no significance. My swimming pool is crystal clear and would kill a goldfish in less than an hour.

Hi Rob, welcome here, nice seeing a fellow saffa on here.

60 Liters falls sadly short for goldfish, maybe two would survive but not thrive in such a tank.
They might only be 4cm now but they could easily triple in size in a year.

Filter wise a sponge filter is the best biological filter, and with a 30% + water change all should be well.

What food do you feed your goldfish and most importantly what type of goldfish do you keep?

Try Hikari pellets, as well as frozen blood worms (cost around R30.00 for months supply)
